Ramblings of Mad Men: Max and Matt Debate the Wii U and Nintendo's Future in the Video Game Market

Maxplatypus: One of my friends at E3 gives Wii U a thumbs up.
SaberTooth313: Haha, Nintendo's stock fell after revealing it.  And they used PS3 and XBOX 360 footage hahaha.
Maxplatypus: Ford was at $1 a couple years ago and we still have jobs.
SaberTooth313: I'm just saying it shows what people think of it.
Maxplatypus: Not really, gamers don't buy stock haha.  Oh course old stuffy men will be skeptical of something new, it's new.  Wii U has potential. but that is also a double-edged sword.
SaberTooth313: Yeah, the Wii U just wasn't exciting enough for a new console.
Maxplatypus: Well it wasn't a console, not yet at least and that's why it's hurting.
SaberTooth313: Yeah.
Maxplatypus: Hurting for some.
SaberTooth313: I want to see some of the games.
Maxplatypus: I'd say its a 60/40 positive split.
SaberTooth313: Yeah I guess.  It won't be worth it if it going to get a ton of crappy games like the Wii.  The main problem I see is that the only good games will be Nintendo's.  That's always their problem.  They can never get any of the ports PS3 and 360 have.  Now with the Wii U they'll be able to get the ports of all the games that have been out for PS3 and 360 just in time for Sony and Microsoft's next consoles.
Maxplatypus: True, but Nintendo's games are so strong by themselves.
SaberTooth313: I know…for Nintendo fans.  Not enough for hardcore gamers.  They lose the whole FPS crowd, RPG crowd, mature crowd.
Maxplatypus: RPG gamers, I would think, mainly stick to PC.  And FPS never would consider Nintendo anyway.
SaberTooth313: Well there are lots of RPGs on PS3 and don't forget fighting games.  It's just that if the Wii U is going to try and be legitimate and not so gimmicky, then it needs better 3rd party support.  The reason the Wii did so well is because it was so brand new and gimmicky and people would buy crappy games because it had motion control.
Maxplatypus: And still will, see Microsoft. But in my mind Nintendo has the games to do that, Microsoft doesn't.
SaberTooth313: Well, here are the reasons I think Microsoft has done well:
1. came out a year before PS3
2. appealed to hardcore gamer which Nintendo doesn't
3. priced more reasonably than PS3
So it depends what they do with the next console.  There will still be people loyal to Microsoft and their games, but if the next Playstation is competitively priced, comes out around the same time, then I think Sony will take a big lead.  They have better games.  I don't know how long Nintendo can keep these gimmicks going.  The Wii sales have lagged.
Maxplatypus: 25 years is a long time.  Wii sales lagged after dominating for years.
SaberTooth313: I know 25 years is a long time.  Nintendo has been the king, but before the Wii, Gamecube was last, and N64 was behind Playstation.  Their consoles just keep losing more.
Maxplatypus: But ahead with GameBoy.  And I really have no idea what the "hardcore gamer " is.
SaberTooth313: Well Nintendo has always dominated the handheld market.  It will be interesting to see if Vita can actually pose a serious challenge to 3DS unlike PSP.
Maxplatypus: I think Wii is like Ford, no matter what happens, it will always be fine, maybe no great, but fine.  Yeah the Vita looks good.
SaberTooth313: Hahah you're just saying that because I work here.  I mean Nintendo will always be fine.  They can thank Mario and Zelda from 25 years ago.  I'm just saying I don't think they're going to continue being the top selling company.
Maxplatypus: I work through ford too.
SaberTooth313: Hey that's true.
Maxplatypus: Top is not always best, example CoD.
SaberTooth313: I know, I wasn't saying it was bad.  I liked N64 over Playstation.  I was just talking purely from an economic and popularity with the masses scale, not their quality.  I've always liked Nintendo.  It's just tough to buy a console when there are going to be 5 good games for it over its lifetime, really good games, but still.  And their online service is so far behind, its shameful.
Maxplatypus: Yea, I mean if they dominate the casual market then they don't need anything else.  And economics isn't the biggest thing anymore since video games are being coming more artful.
SaberTooth313: That's true.  I guess we'll just have to leave it at that for now.  We'll see what happens when more information about the next generation of consoles is released.

So there you go.  I would like to make 2 points.  1) This was done through an IM chat while we were both at work.  2) Max spelled Nintendo incorrectly about 4 or 5 different ways and never spelled it correctly.
