Response to Uncharted 3 Beta (secret: I like it more than Uncharted 2)

Unlike a lot of people on the NaughtyDog Forums, I actually like the beta for Uncharted 3 more than Uncharted 2 with a few exceptions (see: movement).  A large portion of this may be due to the new people playing as the competition is much easier than the grizzled, old, extrememly good, veteran competition of Uncharted 2.  The beta is just more fun.

I really like all of the new additions ND has added.  The boosters, leveling up of boosters, kickbacks, and weapon mods add a lot to the gameplay allowing everyone to personalize their loadout and add a lot of strategy (when to use kickbacks).  I also like the fact that you can change loadouts in the middle of a match.  This will be especially handy if anything like situational awareness is added.  Then you can change to a loadout with cloaked when you realize the other team is a bunch of situational sissies.

I didn't have any problems with the menus although it is really upsetting that you do not get a PSN message when you are invited to a party.  I'm sure that will be fixed.

The movement is problematic.  Sprinting is horrible honestly.  Its jerky and tough to control.  Regular movement is really slow and takes some getting used to.  I would be fine with eliminating sprinting, but they can keep it if they want.  I just want regular movement speed to be increased slightly.

Kickbacks are a fun addition and I haven't found that they give anyone a significant advantage.  They tend to cancel each other out.  Of course an entire team throwing clusters at you when you spawn is annoying.

I like the turrets and the ziplines as they add even more strategy to the game.  It's a much more complex game now and the need to balance your boosters and kickbacks with your teams' are extremely important.  Sniping someone firing from a turret is really satisfying and makes a big difference to your team trying to get across a field.

I like the fact that you can choose which gun to start with.  I know people will argue that it's not as fair as everyone starting with the same gun, but this is a new day for Uncharted.  You start with the weapon that you're best with, if you're best with a G-MAL can't beat another person's best with a Sniper then you're beat.  That's how it goes.  It's the same problem in Uncharted 2 when someone could best you with a sniper while you tried and failed to kill them with an AK.  Now that fight starts as soon as you spawn not when the guy gets to the sniper.  The weapons are balanced and with the mods, you should be able to defeat any weapon if you play it right.  Example: Don't try to take out a person sniping with an AK from far away.  The AK is not good at long range, it has recoil.  Sneak around and get closer in the medium to short range and then take out the sniper.

I mostly play plunder and I can say that plunder in the beta is good, really good.  The lack of a treasure bearer booster is unfortunate, but I guess the Speedy G kickback is supposed to make up for it.  The Clusterbomb kickback is also a great for No Cigars.

Now we get to the levels.  I'm a big fan of the levels (Yemen is my favorite, followed by Airstrip and Chateau).  I know most people complain that they lack the symmetry of the original Uncharted 2 levels, but I'm okay with that.  Symmetry is good because it's fair, but it's also boring.  I knew every way people would approach an area of the maps and it was easy to predict spawn points.  With these new maps, it seems like there are more routes than ever to reach a particular location.  And the lack of symmetry allows for some great spots in the maps.  Example: the corner in the upper room of the Chateau next to the zipline is a great spot.  The Airstrip is a pretty standard map, but I do like the fact that you can close the doors in the warehouse.  Yemen is the best.  It's like the Highrise without the gaps and tons of corridors and passageways for explosive, intense action.

Overall, I think ND has done a great job with the beta (aside from the stupid uncharted TV, the annoying "Kickback available" women, and the elimination of kickback stacking :(  ).  I know the finished product will be more polished and I expect the movement to be better.  Adjusting the sensitivity controls helps the aiming to feel more like Uncharted 2.  The new gameplay additions make the game even more fun, offer more options, and add to the complexity.  ND also added a hardcore mode for the people that hate the new additions.  I think Uncharted 3 will be even better and probably my favorite online experience ever.
