This was my first time covering... yeah, right covering. This was my first time watching E3. You want to know how much I enjoyed it? Even with work, I managed to watch 90% of E3 coverage online and on Tv. I know right, you don't know whether to give me a pat on the back or tell me to get a life.
Both EA and Ubisoft had their presser today and both had their more interesting moments/games and both had their douchey moments. EA's can be summed up with this link,
Wah Wah. And Ubisoft's presentation was near ruined by this
guy.
EA trotted out a Star Wars game, which looked all right. Not much appeal in my mind, but then again I'm not a Star Wars nerd. I really don't need to go over how great Battlefield 3 looks, but I will go over a couple games from EA that caught my eye.
Overstrike: to sum it up, it looks like a grown up version of Incredibles the movie. Subbing family for squad of course
Need for Speed: The Run: It takes you out of the car to run from the police and the people you owe money to? Interesting not because it seems like it will be a great idea, but rather I'm just interested in seeing how it will turn out.
SSX: The detail of the surroundings is what made me intrigued, but yea, I know what you're thinking. It's probably just a snowboarding game
Ubisoft's games were less interesting IMO. There was Ghost Recon which had its draw but in the end was just all about customizing one's rifle. Far Cry 3 looked amazing, couldn't catch any of the audio because all they said was "fuck" and G4TV was not having that. It was much like trying to listen to a 2Pac song on radio edit. Ubisoft's big game was Assassin's Creed. If you want info on that go to IGN or G4.
The Adventures of TinTin: This game caught my eye because it was definitely something that I wasn't expecting and because it's
Belgian. Seems to be a game that most gamers will enjoy and won't be afraid to play around their kids.
Trackmania: Create your own track racing game. Real interests for me will come from how customizable
the cars will be.
Then there was the classic showdown between Microsoft and Sony. This quickly became catering to the market vs catering to the gamer. If you saw any of Microsoft's presentation, you know that you'd better start saving up for that Kinect. I'm no fan of motion capture devices but I understand that they are here to stay. Microsoft really doesn't want to give Xbox users a choice, though. On Xbox, Call of Duty was just Call of Duty and when they tried to do something new, like Ryse or Star Wars Kinect, it just looked like a Wii game without the controller. The best parts of Microsoft's presser was from their non-gaming material. Bing, youtube, and other devices now available from voice control.
Sony on the other hand knocked it out of the park, but it's not like they had any other choice after the PSN debacle. Uncharted 3, Starhawk, Infamous 2 and a special focus on the PSVita, which will be fully compatible with PS3 and for a reasonable price! (250 for wifi, 300 for ATT G3). I really would write more about how awesome Sony's presser was but it was so long and I'm too tired.
Day 1 of E3, great day for third parties and a step forward for the gamer with Sony and a collective yawn about Microsoft.
